What is BDSM, actually?

BDSM stands for Bondage & Discipline, Dominance & Submission, and Sadism & Masochism — an umbrella term for a wide range of consensual practices built on trust, structure, and communication. For some people it's rope and impact play; for others it's a dominant/submissive (D/s) dynamic that shapes an entire relationship. There's no single way to do it.

If you're new to BDSM, you don't need equipment or experience to get started — just curiosity and a willingness to learn how consent, safewords, and aftercare actually work in practice. Our BDSM 101 guides are a good place to begin, and our monthly Forever Social nights are built for exactly this stage.

Why people choose Folsom Forever

Consent-first culture

Every event runs on explicit, ongoing consent — not assumptions. Safewords and check-ins are non-negotiable, for beginners and veterans alike.

Education, not just access

Every workshop pairs technique with a dedicated safety segment, from nerve checks in rope to dosing intensity in impact play.

Mentorship for newcomers

Volunteer guides and our Mentor membership tier exist specifically to help people new to kink — or to a dominant/submissive dynamic — find their footing.

A vetted, accountable community

Membership requires an interview and age verification, and dungeon monitors plus a clear code of conduct keep every event predictable and safe.

Jordan Vance

Education Lead · Certified rope & rigger safety instructor

Nine years teaching rope and impact-play safety in private spaces before Folsom Forever existed, four of them as a dungeon monitor at other clubs' play parties. That's where the habit came from: read the injury reports, then check what actually happened in the room, because the two rarely match. Every guide on this site was checked against our own code of conduct before it was published. Workshops are taught in person, one skill at a time, with a certified instructor watching for exactly the mistakes these articles warn about.
